Reading the body through the pulse

Nadi Pariksha, also called Nadi Vigyan, is one of the classical methods of examination in Ayurveda. The practitioner places three fingers on the radial artery at the wrist and observes the pulse: not only its rate, but its rhythm, strength and character.

Ayurvedic texts describe the pulse as a messenger of the body's internal state. Practitioners read it alongside questions about symptoms, diet, sleep and daily routine to build a picture of a person's health.

The three doshas

Ayurveda describes three functional energies, or doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. Each finger on the wrist is associated with one dosha. The index finger reads vata, the middle finger pitta and the ring finger kapha.

Classical descriptions compare the movement of each pulse to an animal: a snake-like pulse for vata, a jumping, frog-like pulse for pitta and a steady, swan-like pulse for kapha. The practitioner notes which qualities dominate and whether they are in balance.

What happens during a pulse reading

The reading is painless and takes a few minutes. Traditionally it is done in the morning on an empty stomach, or a few hours after a meal, with the patient seated and relaxed. In Ayurvedic practice the right wrist is read for men and the left for women.

A pulse reading is one part of a consultation. Its findings are considered together with your symptoms and history before any treatment is suggested.

What pulse diagnosis can and cannot do

Nadi Pariksha is a traditional assessment, not a replacement for laboratory tests or scans. If you already have a diagnosis or take regular medicine, bring your reports and prescriptions to the consultation, and do not stop any medicine without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it.
